Summer Associates FAQ
What is LeClairRyan’s summer program? The program is designed to introduce summer associates to the Firm and to give them a realistic and meaningful view of the Firm's practice, attorneys and culture. In an effort to offer a practical sense of what Firm life is like for junior associates, summer associates are assigned substantive legal work on matters for Firm clients.
What is the average size of your summer associate class? The average class size is ten to twelve summer associates.
Do you hire first-year law students? At present, we are not hiring first-year law students. We may adopt the practice for future summer associate programs.
Does LeClairRyan place summer associates at all offices? The summer program is based in the Richmond office; however, some summer associates may spend time in another office depending on the individual’s interests and the needs in each office.
What is the callback interview process? After completing the on-campus interview, the Firm may invite a student to visit the Firm for a callback interview. The interview is a series of one-on-one discussions with Firm attorneys. Each interviewing attorney will give input to the Associates Recruiting Committee on whether to offer the candidate a position in the summer associate program.
Will the Firm reimburse travel expenses related to callback interviews? Yes, the Firm will pay reasonable expenses related to callback interviews.
What are the Firm’s hiring criteria? The Firm generally seeks to hire law students who distinguish themselves academically and demonstrate an aptitude for the practice of law on behalf of business clients.
May I split my summer with another firm? LeClairRyan prefers that summer associates spend the full summer with the Firm in order to develop good working relationships. Requests for a split summer are considered on an individual basis.
Does LeClairRyan provide assistance in locating housing for the summer? Temporary housing is not difficult to find in the Richmond, Virginia, metropolitan area. The Firm helps summer associates identify the resources needed to easily locate clean, affordable housing for the summer.
How are assignments handled during the Summer Program? In the spring, the Firm polls summer associates to determine in which areas of practice they are most interested. We make every effort to assign summer associates work in their primary areas of interest, but we also encourage them to take on projects other practice areas. The Director of Recruiting disseminates assignments and the summer associate then meets with the assigning attorney for detailed instructions about the project.
Are summer associates assigned a mentor? Each summer associate is assigned at least one mentor to introduce him or her to the Firm.
How are summer associates evaluated? Assigning attorneys evaluate the work turned in by the summer associates, and the Recruiting Committee uses those evaluations to provide feedback to the summer associates. Some of the criteria on which summer associates are evaluated include the quality of legal reasoning, analysis and judgment, the quality of writing skills exhibited, the understanding of the project, and the interaction of the summer associate with the lawyers on the project team.
At the end of the Summer Program, how are offers determined? The Recruiting Committee reviews the work evaluations provided by the assigning attorneys, and any other evaluations and comments provided to the Committee, to make offer determinations.
By what date are full-time employment offers issued to summer associates? Our goal is to make offers to summer associates no later than October 1 of the current year.
