Mr. Pomfret is a business lawyer who represents a broad range of geospatial technology companies. As the leader of the firm’s Spatial Law practice, Mr. Pomfret advises companies on the legal issues associated with the collection, use and transfer of geolocation and other types of spatial data, including understanding and protecting intellectual property rights in spatial data sets, complying with privacy laws and regulations associated with geolocation information, and allocating the risk associated with issues of data quality and liability. Mr. Pomfret regularly advises companies and investors on such matters as investments and acquisitions, licensing and distribution agreements, developing and implementing privacy policies, and conducting internal and external spatial data audits. He also works as a consultant to government agencies on developing a legal and policy framework for national spatial data infrastructures and the sharing of spatial data between government agencies.
Mr. Pomfret has worked with and around geospatial technology for more than 25 years. Prior to attending law school, Mr. Pomfret served as a satellite imagery analyst with the U.S. government. In that capacity, he developed an imagery collection strategy to monitor critical arms control agreements and worked on requirements for future collection systems. In addition, he served as the special assistant to the U.S. government official responsible for developing the intelligence community's satellite imagery collection and exploitation requirements.
Mr. Pomfret is an active participant in the spatial technology community. He is the executive director of the Centre for Spatial Law and Policy, a nonprofit organization with a mission to develop a consistent and transparent legal and policy framework for the collection, use and transfer of geospatial data around the world. He is also a member of the board of directors of the Open Geospatial Consortium. He writes and speaks extensively about spatial law and policy issues and teaches a spatial law and policy graduate class.
